All-Season Fun

Kiteboarding is a summer and winter activity, and on Lake Mille Lacs, we have the wind, know-how, and lake for all your kiteboarding adventures.

Kiteboarding (winter)

Snow kiteboarding is one of the best adventures the winter has to offer. People of all ages use kites attached to skis or snowboards to zip across the snow-covered Lake Mille Lacs, taking in the view along the way.

Each winter, the area hosts Mille Lacs Kite Crossing, a weekend full of the best kiteboarding opportunities, from freeriding to endurance racing, and more.

The best snow and ice conditions for kiteboarding are usually from late January until early March. Just remember to bring all of your best kiteboarding gear because the weather changes often. Check out a live view of the lake!

Kite surfing (summer)

Because Lake Mille Lacs is so large, riding the big open water with nothing but the wind powering your ride is a remarkable feeling. If you’re looking to experience some serious sailing during the summer months, Lake Mille Lacs is an absolute must-do.

Steady winds, multiple public access points on each side of the lake, and a sandy lake bottom makes Lake Mille Lacs one of the best kite surfing destinations in the Midwest. Be sure to check the wind forecasts while planning your next trip!
