Scenic drives are glowing with fall vibrancy, and you won’t want to miss it!

The month of pumpkins, hayrides, and candy corn is here! We’ll slip on sweaters and decorate to match the changing leaves outside. We’ll excitedly look forward to costumes and candy, and always make sure an apple cider-smelling candle is burning. Fall fun is lurking around every corner, but that’s not the only thing creeping about. As temperatures drop and daylight wanes, Mille Lacs transforms into a Halloween playground for fishermen. October is prime time for spooky monsters of the lake, and instead of warding them off with garlic or zapping them with a proton pack, anglers are chasing down these ghosts of the abyss… and reeling them in.

Are you brave enough to cast? Monsters that lurk in Mille Lacs in the Fall

Monster Smallmouth Runs – As water temperatures cool, the bronzebacks turn on, stacking up and feeding aggressively before winter sets in. The fall is the best chance to land a true giant—the kind that sends shivers down your back—and Mille Lacs is legendary for this smallmouth beast.

Muskie Mayhem – Known as ‘the fish of 10,000 casts,’ muskie fishing in October can feel like the ultimate trick-or-treat–especially around the storied 3 Mile Reef. These behemoths are on the prowl, so get ready for some major thrills when you spend your Spook-tober on Mille Lacs. Muskie nerds unite! If ever you’re going to hook a fish of a lifetime, now is the time!

Ghostly Walleye of the Deep – Yes, they’re the classic Mille Lacs catch, but they show up zombie-style in an apocalypse in the cooler water. Evening and night anglers tell tales of “ghost fish”-pale giants that rise from the depths–glowing under the moonlight. When you summon one of these creatures of the deep to the surface, you’ll know what the legend is all about.

A new month introduces a whole new energy on Lake Mille Lacs. The air has an eerie chill to it, and the landscape is truly electric with color. Fall in northern Minnesota is magical in its unique way, with trophy catches and lake giants, but it’s also about fall adventures beyond the bite!

Autumn Past the Cast

Scenic drives are glowing with fall vibrancy, and you won’t want to miss it! Try the Lake Mille Lacs Scenic Byway or road trip to Mille Lacs Kathio State Park, but keep your eyes open for signs of the season to keep you in that ghostly groove. Perhaps some ominous fog might roll in, or you’ll notice a line of crows perched, silently watching you… a reminder that October always has a few tricks up its sleeve.

If a crisp morning by the lake had a flavor, it would be a Pumpkin Spice Latte. Enjoy one, or your classic black, with Mother Nature as your backdrop. There’s nothing scary about this comforting lakeside treat.

Sometimes, a local watering hole, restaurant, or cozy cabin is all you need to tie up a fall adventure in a burnt orange bow. Warm up after a day on the water, celebrate this magical time of year with the locals, or take the perfect nap with the sounds of the season right outside your window. In the Mille Lacs area, you’ll find the ultimate autumn escape, with monster fish to chase and eerie beauty all around.
