The smallmouth bite is still strong, down somewhat from the insane bite we saw a month or so ago, but still good. Most of these fish range from 10-18 feet, although we still see some fish in shallower water too. The bite is still good enough that we see a WIDE variety of techniques working; leech/slip bobber, crawler/spinner, jig/minnow, drop-shot, tube jigs, wacky’s and jerk baits. Some of the better areas include Indian Point, Brown’s Point, Garrison Reef and Hennepin Island.
The northern bite is clearly weed-oriented – stick to that 9-12 foot depth with suckers for your best action. Wahkon Bay and Garrison Bay both gave up some nice fish the past few days.
As you surely know by now, the walleye season on Mille Lacs closed Monday, August 3rd so you cannot intentionally fish for walleye. Mille Lacs is open for ALL species other than walleye.
