2nd ANNUAL ADOPT-A-SHORELINE CLEAN-UP EFFORT COLLECTS MORE THAN
ONE TON OF TRASH FROM LAKE MILLE LACS SHORELINE
New partners, more volunteers made expanded effort a big success
ONAMIA, Minn. – 2,160 lbs. pounds of trash was collected from the shores of Lake Mille Lacs on Saturday, May 17 as part of the second annual ‘Adopt-a-Shoreline’ clean-up effort, sponsored by Grand Casino Mille Lacs, the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe, Mille Lacs Corporate Ventures, Mille Lacs Area Tourism Council, Twin Pines Resort, Nitti’s Hunter’s Point and Johnson’s Portside Bait & Tackle.
“This year’s effort is a huge success, thanks to the many great partners that joined this year, as well as the volunteers that helped out,” said Mike Engel, interim general manager of Grand Casino Mille Lacs. “Lake Mille Lacs is a community treasure and a critical asset for the region’s tourism economy, and it’s great to see a spirit of cooperation between area businesses working together to protect it.”
Trash bags and work gloves were provided by Grand Casino and made available for pick up at each of the sponsor locations. On Saturday volunteers collected trash that washed ashore following ice out. Organizers of the event believe this year’s participation is a good sign for the future of the event.

“In a tourism economy like ours, we have a responsibility to protect those resources that draw people to our region – and the lake is obviously a huge part of that draw,” said Tina Chapman, executive director of the Mille Lacs Area Tourism Council. “Adopt-a-Shoreline is a great opportunity to come together as a community, and we look forward to continuing to grow the effort in years to come.”
